One For The Ages- Schatz Scores Memorable Victory in Silver Cup

Sarver, PA ( July 21, 2020) The three best Sprint Car drivers in the world entered the gates at Lernerville Speedway to do battle on Tuesday afternoon.  And not only did they not disappoint, they simply and purely amazed the crowd on hand during the Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup for the World of Outlaws NoS Energy Sprint Car Series. Donny Schatz, Kyle Larson and reigning Outlaw champion Brad Sweet put on a furious three lap battle for supremacy to cap off the 40 lap, $25,000 to win main event that will be remembered for years to come.

Sweet brought the 26 car field to the green flag and went straight to work as the race's early leader while Schatz wasted no time at all and rocketing forward from his sixth starting spot to third with Carson Macedo running behind Sweet in the early moments. Following a caution with four laps in the books, Schatz made his way around Sweet for the lead at the six lap mark following a good restart. However, Sweet who entered the night looking to end a three race dnf streak, was not in the mood to simply watch a win drive away from him.

Sweet made his way though a series of cautions and even a red flag period for refueling with 11 laps down following a flat tire for the hard charging Darren Pittman, looking for the perfect moment to make his move on the leader. Meanwhile, the red hot Kyle Larson who came into the night with an average feature finish below 2.0 in his past 33 races, found himself running third after swapping the fourth position with Parker Price-Miller, David Gravel and Sheldon Haudenschild on a number of occasions.

Following a caution with 23 laps down, Sweet got a solid restart behind Schatz and pulled to his tail tank and proceeded to make his move for the lead down the front stretch. Sweet then made use of the increasing lapped traffic in front of him, sending one car after another for Schatz to deal with as Larson finally made his way around Haudenschild for good, wresting away the third spot.

Schatz made his way through and retook the lead for a very brief time until Sweet demanded it back and drove past him with authority at the lap 34 mark. But behind the leaders was Larson who was determined to make one last ditch effort to keep his hot streak intact. With five laps to go, Larson made his way past Schatz in turn two with a slide job and set his sights on the leader. However, coming out of turn four with one lap to go, Schatz took the spot back as the top three cars were within a mere two car lengths and after Sweet appeared to bobble on the top of the speedway entering turn one, Schatz made his way underneath for the lead coming out of turn two. Larson then made his move past Sweet with one last set of turns to come up with a pass for the win, but his bid came up just short at the line as Schatz managed to pull closer to the overall series points lead with the victory.

Racing returns to The Action Track this Friday night as the inaugural RUSH Summer Showcase featuring the RUSH Late Models, Sprint Cars and Sportsman Modifeds make their 2020 debuts. Joining them will be the Millerstown Pic-A-Part Pro Stocks. Pits open at 4 PM, grandstands at 5 PM and racing begins at 7:30 PM.
